Enneagram Leadership Insights: What I Learned from My Certification

I recently completed my Enneagram certification through IEQ9 Integrative Enneagram Solutions.
Like many tools in the leadership and coaching space, I went into it curious, but also practical.Would this actually help my clients create meaningful change?
What I found was this:
The Enneagram isn’t just about personality. It’s a powerful tool for leadership, about understanding why we think, react, and behave the way we do and how that shows up in our work, leadership, and relationships.
What Makes the Enneagram Different
There are a lot of personality tools out there.
What sets the Enneagram apart is that it focuses on:
Core motivations
Internal drivers
Patterns under stress and pressure
It goes deeper than surface-level traits.
And when you layer in the 27 subtypes, the level of nuance increases significantly.
Instead of broad categories, you start to see:
How two people with the same “type” can behave very differently
Why certain environments bring out different sides of us
How instinctual patterns shape decision-making, communication, and relationships
This is where the insights become incredibly practical.

The Shift: From Judgement to Understanding
One of the most powerful takeaways from this work is how quickly it changes how you see others.
Instead of thinking:
“Why are they so reactive?”
“Why are they avoiding this?”
“Why are they so controlling?”
You start to consider:
What might be driving this behaviour?
What are they protecting?
What matters most to them in this moment?
That shift alone creates more empathy.
And in leadership, empathy isn’t just a “nice to have.”It’s what allows you to:
Navigate conflict more effectively
Communicate in a way others can actually hear
Build stronger, more trusting teams
How the Enneagram Supports Leadership Self-Awareness
In my coaching work, I see leaders struggle with:
Giving feedback
Managing different personalities
Navigating tension or conflict
Understanding why certain team members respond the way they do
The Enneagram gives language to those dynamics.
For example:
Some team members are driven by achievement and external validation
Others are motivated by security and certainty
Others prioritize harmony and avoiding conflict
If you lead all of them the same way, you miss what actually drives them.
But when you understand these differences, you can:
Tailor your communication
Anticipate reactions
Lead more effectively across different personalities
How Teams Benefit
At a team level, this work can be transformative.
It helps teams:
Understand each other’s working styles
Reduce misinterpretation of behaviour
Navigate conflict more constructively
Build stronger collaboration
Instead of taking things personally, teams start to see patterns.
And that creates space for better conversations.
Beyond Work: Relationships and Communication
This doesn’t stop at work.
The same patterns show up in:
Partnerships
Parenting
Friendships
Understanding how you and others:
Handle stress
Communicate needs
React under pressure
Can completely change how you relate to one another.
It creates a level of awareness that’s hard to “unsee.” My husband and I did the Couples Report which has given us insights and awareness of each of our types what each of our needs, motivations and triggers are which has been tremendously helpful.
What I Appreciated Most About the IEQ9 Approach
What stood out to me in working with IEQ9 was the balance between depth and practicality.
It’s not about putting people in a box.
It’s about:
Expanding awareness
Creating choice in how you respond
Using that insight to drive meaningful change
That aligns closely with how I approach coaching.
Final Thought
Self-awareness is one of the most important leadership skills you can develop.
But awareness alone isn’t enough.
What matters is how you use that awareness:
To lead more intentionally
To communicate more effectively
To build stronger, more connected relationships
The Enneagram is one of the tools that helps make that possible.
If you’re curious about how the Enneagram could support your leadership, team dynamics, or even your own personal development, I’d be happy to share more about how I’m starting to integrate this into my coaching work.
