Career Dissatisfaction vs Burnout: How to Tell the Difference

Feeling drained at work can mean different things.
Sometimes it’s burnout — you’re overwhelmed, overworked, and running on empty.
Other times, it’s something deeper: your work no longer fits.
Understanding the difference matters, because the solutions are not the same.
What Burnout Looks Like
Burnout is typically caused by too much demand over time without enough recovery.
Common signs:
exhaustion
irritability
difficulty focusing
feeling overwhelmed by your workload
The key here is that the work itself may still be meaningful — but the conditions are unsustainable.
What Career Dissatisfaction Looks Like
Career dissatisfaction is less about volume — and more about alignment.
You might notice:
lack of interest in the work itself
feeling disconnected or unmotivated
questioning the purpose or impact of what you’re doing
Even if your workload improves, the underlying feeling doesn’t fully go away.
Why This Distinction Matters
If you’re burned out:→ You may need rest, boundaries, or a change in workload.
If you’re dissatisfied:→ You may need a shift in role, environment, or direction.
Misidentifying the problem can keep you stuck.
Questions to Ask Yourself
If my workload improved, would I feel better — or still unfulfilled?
Do I enjoy any parts of my work, or very few?
When I imagine a different role, do I feel relief or resistance?
These questions can help clarify what’s really going on.
Final Thought
Not all discomfort means you need to leave — but some does.
The goal isn’t to rush into change, but to understand what your experience is telling you.
If you’re unsure whether you’re experiencing burnout or something deeper, this is something we often unpack in coaching.
